If you are confused on the differences between the two version or are simply confused on which order to watch what, I made up this guide to step you through the process and explain the differences.
Ultimately, there are two different versions of Hunter X Hunter.
The first series was released in 1999, but after catching up to the manga, the series ended with 62 episodes. Three OVA's were made after the series ended (8+8+14 episodes) that continue the story (true to the manga). You can consider all 3 OVA's as part of the 1999 series. Driver home stepper unipolar.
In 2011, the manga (still being incomplete) did advance significantly enough for Madhouse to pick up the series and do a reboot. Modernizing the graphics and starting from the beginning. The 2011 version follows the manga very closely and is a bit higher paced then the 1999 version. Ultimately the 2011 version catches up to the 1999 version at episode 75 and then continues the story past the 1999 version from that point on.
However, both versions have their own strengths, and since the series are so similar, people often wonder which one is better. That is up for debate. I personally think the character development in the 1999 version is better, but others prefer the 2011 version. Regardless, if you do want to watch the 1999 version, here is an episode guide.
Watching Hunter X Hunter 1999, then OVA, then pick up at 2011 version
- Hunter X Hunter (1999) Episodes: 1-62
- Hunter X Hunter: Spider (OVA) Episodes: 1-8
- Hunter X Hunter: Greed Island (OVA) Episodes: 1-8
- Hunter X Hunter: Greed Island Final (OVA) Episodes: 1-13 (I'd Skip 14 to avoid confusion)
- Hunter X Hunter (2011) Start At Episode: 75
Watching Hunter X Hunter 2011 version doesn't have any OVA's to worry about.
- Hunter X Hunter (2011) Episodes: Ongoing
I hope this helps clear some confusion about the series or how to watch the 1999 version and continue to the 2011 version properly. If anyone has anything to add to this, please let me know and I'll add it.
